The invasion of corporate and personal computers continues to grow as the invaders become more sophisticated over time. new users of computer hardware and software are especially vulnerable, not realizing the inherent problems involved in downloading programs, attachments and other information from the Internet which then become resident and begin transmitting data, which the user believes secure, to criminals intent on data theft. The confidential data thus acquired can be sold or used to hijack the identity of the victim to perpetrate fraud. Physical access to a computer is not required to accomplish some of the techniques used by Internet criminals. Spyware can easily be acquired up by visiting a web site and spyware is often included in downloaded freeware or shareware.
While often the sign of a spyware/adware install will include an increase in the number of pop ups and slowing of functions, many programs called key loggers will give few signs that will enable detection. These surreptitious residents will busy themselves transmitting critical data about all your activity to a remote location. This data may be used for criminal purpose by the installer or sold to third parties. Usually the users of such illegally obtained information are located offshore and cannot be tracked or apprehended by normal means. While the major part of such keylogging is utilized by advertisers and marketers to define and analyze buying habits, the criminal use of such data has increased significantly in recent years and that trend continues.
Since there is a continuous introduction of new programs and techniques of spyware, location and removal continues to be difficult and less than perfect. The most common form of spyware is adware. Since much of the past adware was delivered through pop up ads , a large number of programs have been developed to combat the pop up. At the same time there are as many developments skirting the pop up ad blockers that make the task continuously more difficult.Adware also is designed to monitor your online activity and to relay that data to advertisers who then use it to send junk email and spam.
Browser hijackers are another form of malicious application. These are designed to change your start page and preferred search engine to a site full of ads or hardcore adult material. At the same time, these programs are also data miners which tracks your Internet browsing patterns, sending the information to a central database where it can be sold.
One of the worst forms of spyware are modem hijackers. These applications, also called dialers, install themselves so they can use your Internet connection to dial long distance or premium rate phone numbers and you are the one charged for the calls. Huge amounts can be run up before the account holder becomes aware of the invasion.
To combat the current crop of spyware threats, you will need two or more anti-spyware programs. The key to selection is not necessarily price. Many of the best programs are free. Essential to the effectiveness of such programs is the methodology of updating the database used to detect the latest form of spyware and the frequency of such updates. Good programs scan your system, identify infected files and either quarantine or remove them. Since a number of malware installations will affect your registry file values a program to remedy such aberrations is also a necessary tool to add to your arsenal. Ad Aware from Lavasoft and Spybot Search and Destroy are two free spyware tools that work well together in catching the bulk of spyware infections and Registry Mechanic is a good tool to keep your registry files in shape.
Last but not least, install a firewall on your computer to block a large amount of known spyware applications and include a a good anti-virus program. There are a number of combination tools available that put all these aspects together in one application. I don't recommend any since they are expensive and hog memory. You can do better being selective and picking the separate programs that are proven to work well. Assemble a complete defense system relatively cheaply and don't get suckered by most of the advertising.
